Hibiscus 'Sun Showers'

How to grow Hibiscus 'Sun Showers' in NZ

Hibiscus 'Sun Showers' grows best in warm, frost-free parts of New Zealand where it can enjoy full sun and shelter from strong winds. Plant in fertile, free-draining soil enriched with compost to encourage vigorous growth and abundant blooms. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in summer, and apply a balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks from spring to autumn. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and stimulate fresh shoots. In cooler climates, grow in a large container that can be moved to a sheltered or indoor position over winter. Mulching around the base will help retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth.

Hibiscus 'Sun Showers' care tips

Keep the soil consistently moist without becoming waterlogged. Remove spent blooms to encourage ongoing flowering. Watch for pests such as aphids and scale, and treat promptly if they appear. Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering, poor drainage, or nutrient deficiencies. Liquid feed during the growing season will promote strong, healthy plants and prolific flowering.

Hibiscus 'Sun Showers' size, spacing, and growth rate

This variety generally reaches 1.5–2.5 m tall and 1–2 m wide, with moderate to fast growth in warm climates. Allow at least 1.5 m spacing between plants for optimal airflow and growth.

Landscaping uses for Hibiscus 'Sun Showers'

Use Hibiscus 'Sun Showers' for mixed borders, feature planting, and layered garden designs. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth. Combine it with plants that enjoy similar light, soil, and watering conditions for a practical and cohesive display. Place it near contrasting foliage so its shape stands out clearly in the planting. A small group can connect separate parts of the garden without making the design feel crowded.
