How to grow Hibiscus 'Psyche' in NZ

Hibiscus ‘Psyche’ is best grown in a warm, frost-free location with full sun to encourage abundant flowering. Plant in fertile, free-draining soil enriched with compost, and provide shelter from strong winds to protect the delicate blooms. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in summer, and feed with a balanced fertiliser from spring through autumn to sustain strong growth and continuous flowering. Light pruning after the main flush will keep the shrub tidy and promote new shoots. In cooler areas, grow in a large container that can be moved to a sheltered or indoor position during winter. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Hibiscus ‘Psyche’ care tips

Keep soil evenly moist but avoid overwatering. Apply liquid fertiliser regularly in the growing season to support prolific flowering. Remove spent blooms to extend the display. Monitor for pests such as aphids and scale, treating early if they appear. If leaves yellow, check for drainage issues, nutrient deficiency, or cold damage.

Hibiscus ‘Psyche’ size, spacing, and growth rate

This variety typically grows 1.5–2.5 m tall and 1–2 m wide in the garden, with a moderate to fast growth rate in warm climates. Allow about 1.5 m spacing between plants for good airflow and full growth potential.
