Hibiscus 'Diana'

How to grow Hibiscus 'Diana' in NZ

Hibiscus 'Diana' grows best in full sun with well drained soil and good airflow. It is well suited to most regions of New Zealand, including areas that experience winter frosts, as it is more cold tolerant than many tropical hibiscus types. Improve the soil with compost before planting to encourage strong root development. Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry periods to maintain healthy growth and flowering.

Hibiscus 'Diana' care tips

Hibiscus 'Diana' benefits from feeding in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote strong growth and abundant blooms. Prune in late winter or early spring while dormant, cutting back to shape and encourage fresh shoots that will carry the flowers. Remove any weak or damaged branches to improve structure. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance and only requires watering during extended dry spells.

Hibiscus 'Diana' size, spacing, and growth rate

Hibiscus 'Diana' typically grows to around two to three metres tall and one point five to two metres wide, forming an upright and well structured shrub. Space plants at least one point five metres apart to allow for airflow and full development. Growth is moderate, with steady extension each year once established. Its height and clean white flowers make it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest in garden beds.

Landscaping uses for Hibiscus 'Diana'

Hibiscus 'Diana' is ideal for mixed shrub borders, formal gardens, and as a feature plant in sunny positions. Its pure white blooms create striking contrast when planted alongside darker foliage or brightly coloured perennials. It can be used as a flowering hedge or planted in rows along fences and boundaries. This variety also works well as a standalone specimen that draws attention during the summer flowering season.
