Hebe strictissima

How to grow Hebe strictissima in NZ

Growing Hebe strictissima in NZ is straightforward as it is naturally adapted to local conditions. Plant in full sun or partial shade on well drained soil for best results. It establishes quickly and tolerates coastal winds, exposed sites, and variable soil types. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and reduce weeds. Once established, it requires little additional care, making it a great choice for low input and sustainable gardens.

Hebe strictissima care tips

Caring for Hebe strictissima is simple, making it suitable for busy gardeners. Light trimming after flowering or in late summer will keep the plant compact and tidy. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood as it may not regrow well. Occasional feeding with a balanced fertiliser in spring promotes lush foliage. Watering is only required in prolonged dry periods, as this hardy shrub is naturally tolerant of NZ's varied conditions.

Hebe strictissima size, spacing, and growth rate

Hebe strictissima typically reaches around 1.5 to 2 metres tall and about 1 metre wide, forming an upright, bushy shrub. When used for hedging, plants should be spaced approximately 75 cm apart for a dense screen. Growth is moderate, allowing it to fill space steadily without becoming invasive. With regular light trimming, the plant maintains a neat form, making it highly effective for structured plantings and native style gardens.

Landscaping uses for Hebe strictissima

Hebe strictissima is widely used in landscaping for its durability and dense, upright form. It makes an excellent choice for low to medium hedges, shelter plantings, or as a background shrub in mixed borders. Its ability to handle coastal exposure and poor soils makes it ideal for challenging sites. In native gardens, it pairs well with other hardy NZ species and provides food and shelter for wildlife, adding ecological value alongside visual appeal.
