What are the garden uses for Hebe salicifolia in NZ?

Hebe salicifolia is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is commonly included in a mixed planting, as an informal hedge, around water features such as ponds and streams, or in revegetation plantings. This NZ native is a hardy plant and a popular choice.

What size does Hebe salicifolia grow to?

Hebe salicifolia typically grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. This size is a guide only, as they will grow taller in partial shade. Conversely, they will grow shorter in exposed positions. Ultimately, they perform best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It will not grow well in heavy shade but tolerates coastal conditions, dry periods, moderate frost, and heavy soils.

Hebe salicifolia plant care

The most important part of caring for the Hebe salicifolia is to make sure they have a well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged at any time. This, along with overwatering, is the leading cause of plants failing to perform or dying. The plants can be lightly trimmed any time, but this is best undertaken in summer. The final elements are to feed the plants in spring with a general fertiliser and keep an eye on watering so they do not dry out. Keep an eye out for scale insects and mealybugs and treat with an appropriate agrichemical if necessary.

How to grow a Hebe salicifolia hedge

Growing a Hebe salicifolia hedge starts with getting the correct plant spacing. The ideal spacing is 1 m apart for a formal hedge (i.e., one that is trimmed) and 2.5 m apart for an informal hedge. The hedge is generally grown to 1.5-2 m tall and lightly trimmed after flowering. Some flowers may be lost during trimming, but this is critical for avoiding a large and woody hedge in the future. Conversely, it also makes for an excellent informal hedge, left untrimmed.

Hebe salicifolia pruning

Hebe salicifolia is a fast-growing plant, so pruning is required to keep the plants contained. The best time to prune is during summer when the plants are actively growing, as they will shoot away again quickly. At this time, up to 70% of the vegetation can safely be removed if aggressive pruning is required. However, The Plant Company recommends a little and often approach, which can be achieved with an annual trim in summer. Light pruning can occur during the other seasons without issue.
