What are the garden uses for Hebe Red Edge in NZ?

Hebe Red Edge is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly included in a mixed planting, used in borders, maintained in a container, planted around outdoor living areas, or mass planted on a bank. It is a great complement to a modern and native garden where it brings both colour, texture, and elegance to a space. This NZ native is a hardy plant and is popular with landscape designers across NZ.

What does Hebe Red Edge need to grow well?

Hebe Red Edge grows best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained soil. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, coastal environments, moderate wind, and humid climates. If the soil is heavy or is prone to wetness, this plant will not perform unless the drainage issues are corrected.

Hebe Red Edge care

The most important part of caring for Hebe Red Edge is to make sure they have a well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged at any time. This, along with over-watering, are the main causes of plants to fail to perform or die. The plants can be lightly trimmed any time but this is best undertaken in summer. The final elements are to feed the plants in spring with a general fertiliser and keep an eye on watering so they do not dry out. Keep an eye out for scale insect and mealy bugs and treat with an appropriate agrichemical if necessary.

Hebe Red Edge companion plants

When considering companion plants for Hebe Red Edge, we typically chose plants that like the same conditions and complement each other. This Hebe prefers well-drained soil and a sunny location. Some good NZ native options include: Acaena purpurea, Chionochloa flavicans, flaxes, and other Hebe varieties. Other (non-NZ native) options that pair well with this Hebe include Lavender, Salvia, and Penstemon. These latter options bring bold colour whereas the earlier choices tend to bring subtle colouring.
