Hebe Jewel Of The Nile features showy, purple flower clusters from summer through autumn. These are held above the colourful foliage which emerges with purple tones on leaves that are variegated cream and green. It grows as a bushy, evergreen shrub to about 80 cm tall and the same wide. Strobilanthes dyeriana, commonly known as Persian Shield, grows best in NZ in a warm, sheltered position with bright, indirect light or partial shade. Plant in fertile, free-draining soil and water regularly to keep the soil lightly moist, especially during dry periods. Protect from frost and cold winds to preserve the vivid purple foliage. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in the growing season and pinch back stems to encourage bushier growth.
