Hebe decumbens

Hebe decumbens plant care tips

The most important part of caring for Hebe decumbens is to ensure they have well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged at any time. This, along with over-watering, is the leading cause of plants failing to perform or dying. The plants can be lightly trimmed any time, but this is best undertaken in summer. The final elements are to feed the plants in spring with a general fertiliser and keep an eye on watering so they do not dry out. Keep an eye out for scale insects and mealybugs, and treat with an appropriate agricultural chemical if necessary.

How to grow Hebe decumbens in NZ

Grow Hebe decumbens in full sun or partial shade, using fertile soil that drains freely. Plant at the same depth as the nursery container, firm the soil gently, and water thoroughly. Add mulch around the roots while keeping it away from the stems. Water consistently during the first growing season and choose a position with room for the mature plant. Check moisture regularly while the new roots establish in their surroundings.

Hebe decumbens size, spacing, and growth rate

Hebe decumbens typically reaches about 75 cm tall and 1.5 m wide in suitable conditions. Allow about 1.5 m between centres for separate specimens, leaving room for mature foliage and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Use the mature spread as a guide when planting beside paths, walls, or neighbouring plants. Containers can limit overall size, so choose a pot that supports healthy root development. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust surrounding planting as needed.

Landscaping uses for Hebe decumbens

Use Hebe decumbens for mixed borders, feature planting, and layered garden designs. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth. Combine it with plants that enjoy similar light, soil, and watering conditions for a practical and cohesive display. Repeated planting adds rhythm, while a single specimen can create a distinctive focal point. Choose a position that balances visual appeal with easy access for care.
