Hebe 'Black Satin'

How to grow Hebe 'Black Satin' in NZ

Hebe 'Black Satin' grows best in full sun or partial shade and prefers fertile, free draining soil. A position with plenty of light helps encourage compact growth and strong foliage colour. Plant into well prepared soil and water regularly while the roots establish. Once established, provide additional moisture during prolonged dry periods but avoid consistently wet ground. Apply a general garden fertiliser during spring to support healthy growth. Mulching around the root zone helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Good drainage is particularly important during wetter New Zealand winters.

Hebe 'Black Satin' care tips

Hebe 'Black Satin' is relatively easy to maintain once established. Water during prolonged dry periods, particularly while plants are young, but avoid waterlogged soil. Feed during spring with a general garden fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth. Lightly trim after flowering or when required to maintain a compact, tidy shape and encourage fresh growth. Remove damaged, congested, or poorly positioned stems as needed, but avoid cutting heavily into old bare wood. Mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds while keeping it clear of the main stems.

Hebe 'Black Satin' size, spacing, and growth rate

Hebe 'Black Satin' develops into a compact evergreen shrub with a dense, rounded habit and a moderate growth rate. Allow approximately 60 to 100 cm between plants in group plantings or informal hedges, depending on the density required. Wider spacing allows individual plants to display their natural form, while closer planting creates a fuller effect more quickly. Light trimming can be used to maintain the desired dimensions. The manageable growth habit of Hebe 'Black Satin' makes it suitable for smaller gardens, mixed borders, containers, courtyards, rock gardens, and larger landscape plantings.

Landscaping uses for Hebe 'Black Satin'

Hebe 'Black Satin' is an excellent landscaping shrub for adding dark foliage, evergreen structure, and strong contrast to New Zealand gardens. Its compact habit makes it particularly effective in mixed borders, rock gardens, courtyards, low hedges, and contemporary planting schemes. It also performs well in containers around patios and outdoor living areas. Hebe 'Black Satin' combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, silver foliage, and colourful flowering perennials. Plant it individually as a dramatic feature or repeat it through garden beds to create rhythm, depth, contrast, and year round interest.
