Growing Fuchsia bacillaris Successfully in NZ

Fuchsia bacillaris is well-suited to New Zealand’s cooler, temperate regions. This compact, twiggy shrub prefers a sheltered, part-shade position with moist, well-drained soil. It thrives in environments with good air circulation and consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Protect from heavy frosts and strong winds. Light pruning in late winter helps maintain its shape and encourages fresh flowering growth.

Fuchsia bacillaris Care Tips

Plant Fuchsia bacillaris in part-shade with shelter from frost and wind. Use moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during dry spells to moisten the soil, but avoid waterlogging. Apply garden fertiliser in spring to support growth and flowering. Prune lightly in late winter to maintain a tidy shape and remove dead or damaged wood. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Fuchsia bacillaris Plant Size and Spacing

Fuchsia bacillaris is a compact, fine-stemmed shrub that typically grows to around 60 to 90 cm tall and 60 cm wide. For best results, space plants about 50 to 60 cm apart to ensure good airflow and allow for natural spreading. It’s well-suited to borders, woodland gardens, and container planting.
