Commonly known as Lilly Pilly, this is a vigorous and popular shrub grown for its lush and colourful foliage. The new foliage is a striking bronze-red and ages to become dark green, resulting in the plant often having dual colouring. The small, glossy leaves are produced on a dense network of short branches. Small and fragrant, white flowers are produced in summer and provide extra interest to this plant. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary which encourages new growth. This Eugenia grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site, and it is tolerant of dry periods, moderate frost, cool climates, and coastal conditions. Lilly Pilly is commonly used for hedging and screening, as a backdrop for smaller plants, as a specimen plant, added to a mixed planting, or grown in a container. As a potted plant it looks impressive on a patio or around pool and other living areas.
