Escallonia 'Crimson Spire'

How to grow Escallonia 'Crimson Spire' in NZ

Escallonia 'Crimson Spire' grows best in a sunny position with well drained soil. It adapts readily to a variety of soil types and performs well throughout much of New Zealand. Water regularly during establishment to encourage strong root development, then only during prolonged dry periods. Adding compost to the planting area improves soil fertility and structure. Applying mulch around the base helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and support healthy long term growth and establishment.

Escallonia 'Crimson Spire' care tips

Escallonia 'Crimson Spire' is easy to maintain and requires little ongoing care once established. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage growth and prolific flowering. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain the narrow shape and encourages dense new growth. Remove any damaged or dead branches as required. Water during extended dry periods to keep plants healthy and flowering freely. Its hardy nature makes it an excellent choice for low maintenance landscapes.

Escallonia 'Crimson Spire' size, spacing, and growth rate

Escallonia 'Crimson Spire' typically grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 80 centimetres to 1.5 metres wide, forming a narrow upright shrub. Growth is moderate to fast, allowing plants to establish quickly and provide effective screening. Space plants approximately 60 to 80 centimetres apart for hedging or screening applications. This spacing allows healthy development while creating a dense and attractive vertical display that is ideal for smaller spaces.
