Echium pininana (Giant Tree Echium)

Giant Tree Echium, Pine Echium, Giant Vipers-Bugloss, Tower of Jewels

Echium pininana, commonly known as the Giant Tree Echium, is an herbaceous perennial that typically lives for 2 or 3 years. In the first year, it produces soft, green foliage, which is followed in the second year by a dense, 4 m long flower spike. The flower spike, produced in spring through summer, is an impressive mass of leaves and small blue flowers. Excluding the flower spike, it typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide, growing best on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun. It is a hardy plant and will cope with frost, dry periods, and coastal environments. This is an excellent plant for seaside gardens, mixed plantings, planting on a bank, or using as a backdrop for smaller plants. This is a bold and beautiful plant.

Growing Echium pininana in NZ

Echium pininana thrives in New Zealand’s warmer regions, especially in coastal or frost-free areas. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil to encourage strong, upright growth. It prefers sheltered sites protected from strong winds, as its tall flower spike is susceptible to damage. Water during dry periods, but avoid waterlogged conditions. In cooler areas, protect young plants from frost with mulch or frost cloth.

Plant Size and Spacing

Echium pininana can reach an impressive height of 3–4 m when in flower, with a basal rosette spreading up to 1 m wide. When planting, allow at least 1.2–1.5 m between plants to give them room to develop their complete form and prevent overcrowding. This spacing also helps with airflow, reducing the risk of mildew or rot in humid conditions.
