Doryanthes palmeri, commonly known as The Giant Spear Lily, is an Australian native grown for its amazing flowers and attractive foliage. Long stems up to 5 m long in spring give rise to showy, red-orange flowers that are great for attracting birds. The stems often start to droop as the weight of the flowers comes on. The foliage is a rosette of long, sword like leaves that can reach 3 m long as it spreads up to 2 m wide. It grows best in full on in a well-drained soil, and is tolerant of extended dry periods as well as coastal environments. Doryanthes palmeri looks great in mixed plantings, especially when mass planted on a bank or the like. It is also often used as a backdrop for smaller plants, planted around pools, or included in tropical gardens.
