How to grow Daphne mezereum in NZ

Daphne mezereum grows best in full sun to partial shade in a sheltered position with well drained soil rich in organic matter. It prefers cool root conditions and performs well in many parts of New Zealand where drainage is good. Avoid heavy wet soils and disturbance to the roots when planting. Water regularly during dry periods but do not overwater.

Daphne mezereum care tips

Daphne mezereum is relatively low maintenance once established but resents root disturbance. Apply mulch to keep roots cool and conserve moisture, keeping it clear of the stem base. Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth. Prune only lightly after flowering to maintain shape, as heavy pruning can reduce flowering performance.

Daphne mezereum size, spacing, and growth rate

Daphne mezereum typically grows to around 1 to 1.5 metres tall and about 1 metre wide, forming a neat upright shrub. Growth is moderate in suitable conditions. When planting in borders or feature areas, allow at least 1 metre between plants to provide room for mature spread and good airflow.

Landscaping uses for Daphne mezereum

Daphne mezereum is perfect for planting near entrances, patios, and pathways where its beautiful fragrance can be enjoyed. It works well in mixed shrub borders and woodland style gardens. Pair it with early flowering bulbs and shade loving perennials for a layered seasonal display. Its scented blooms add charm and interest to late winter landscapes.
