How to grow Cotoneaster 'Skogholm' in NZ

Cotoneaster 'Skogholm' grows best in full sun or partial shade with fertile free draining soil. Improve the planting area with compost before planting to encourage healthy root development. Water regularly while plants establish, then only during prolonged dry periods. It tolerates coastal conditions, wind, and light frost, making it suitable for a wide range of New Zealand gardens.

Cotoneaster 'Skogholm' care tips

Cotoneaster 'Skogholm' is easy to maintain once established. Feed during spring with a quality slow release fertiliser to encourage vigorous foliage and abundant flowering. Lightly trim after flowering if shaping is required, although the natural spreading habit is usually best left untouched. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds while keeping it clear of the stems.

Cotoneaster 'Skogholm' size, spacing, and growth rate

Cotoneaster 'Skogholm' typically grows to around one metre tall and spreads to two to three metres wide. Space plants about one and a half to two metres apart when using them as ground cover so they can grow together naturally. Growth is moderate to fast, quickly forming a dense evergreen carpet across the planting area.

Landscaping uses for Cotoneaster 'Skogholm'

Cotoneaster 'Skogholm' is ideal for covering banks, cascading over retaining walls, suppressing weeds, and filling large landscape areas. Its spreading habit also makes it suitable for mixed shrub borders and coastal gardens. The white flowers, colourful berries, and evergreen foliage provide year round interest while creating an attractive habitat for garden birds.
