“Purpureus” is a selection of the commonly known Smoke Tree, and is grown for its foliage and interesting flowers. It gets its common name from the billowy hairs on spent flower clusters which turn pink-purple in summer and resemble a puff of smoke. The foliage emerges light purple in spring, darkens with age, then develops amber and burgundy tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained, sheltered site, in full sun. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. “Purpureus” is commonly grown as a specimen, trimmed into a hedge, maintained in a courtyard or cottage garden, or planted anywhere the vibrancy and beauty of this plant can be enjoyed.
