As autumn progresses the leaves develop amber and burgundy tones before falling. It gets its common name from the billowy hairs on spent flower clusters. These turn pink-purple in summer and resemble a puff of smoke. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry.
