Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' (Smoke Tree)

How to grow Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' in NZ

To grow Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' in NZ, choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil. This plant thrives in full sun, which helps intensify its purple leaf colour and promotes flowering. It tolerates a range of soil types, including clay, as long as drainage is good. Plant in spring or autumn, and water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to maintain shape or encourage denser foliage. Suitable for borders, feature planting, or mixed shrub beds.

Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' care tips

To care for Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple', plant it in full sun with well-drained soil to enhance leaf colour and flowering. Water regularly during the first growing season, then only during dry periods once established. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain size and shape, or cut back hard for bushier growth and larger leaves. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring if growth appears weak.
