Cotinus coggygria Purpureus, commonly known as the Purple Smoke Tree, gets its common name from the billowy hairs on spent flower clusters which turn pink-purple in summer and resemble a puff of smoke. The foliage emerges light purple in spring, darkens with age, then develops amber and burgundy tones in autumn before falling as it grows to 3 m tall and the same wide. Cotinus coggygria Purpureus is commonly grown as a specimen, trimmed into a hedge, maintained in a courtyard or cottage garden, or planted anywhere the vibrancy and beauty of this plant can be enjoyed.
