How to grow Cordyline fruticosa in NZ

Cordyline fruticosa grows best in warm, sheltered locations with filtered sunlight and free-draining soil. In cooler parts of New Zealand, it’s ideal as an indoor or patio plant. Water regularly to maintain humidity and prevent drying out, especially during the summer. Protect from frost and cold winds. Apply mulch to retain moisture and feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer. Remove old leaves to keep the plant looking tidy and vibrant.

Cordyline fruticosa care tips

Place in bright, indirect light, protected from harsh sun and cold. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mist regularly to maintain humidity, especially indoors. Use a well-draining potting mix and fertilise monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Remove older leaves as they fade to encourage new growth. Protect foliage from frost and cold drafts to keep it vibrant and healthy.

Plant Size and Spacing

Cordyline fruticosa typically grows 1–2 metres tall and about 60–90 cm wide. When planting outdoors in warm areas, space plants 60–80 cm apart to allow for adequate airflow and their mature spread. Indoors, choose a pot that allows for root development and repot as needed.
