“Rainbow Surprise” is a compact, NZ native shrub grown for its colourful foliage. The small leaves have a pink edge and green centre with the colours intensifying as winter sets in. This evergreen typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. It grows best when planted in a full sun or partial shade position that is well-drained. This hardy plant will tolerate most soils, except extreme wet or dry, as well as frost, cool climates, and coastal conditions. “Rainbow Surprise” is often used as a hedge, added to a mixed planting, included in a coastal garden, planted around pool and barbecue areas, or maintained in a container. It is great for providing a burst of colour, particularly through the winter months.
