“Portwine” is a NZ native shrub that features rich, dark bronze-red foliage. The glossy leaves are held on sturdy, upright branches, and tend to alter the intensity of the colouring through the different seasons. It typically grows to 1.5 m high and 1 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance and leaf colouring is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, wind, dry periods, and coastal environments. “Portwine” is an excellent landscaping plant due to its colour and versatility. It is commonly clipped into a hedge, included in mixed plantings, maintained in a container, planted around pool and barbecue areas, or planted to soften a bland wall. Space plants 75 cm apart for hedging.
