“Flat Freddy” is a NZ native shrub that is often used as a groundcover. It reaches just 15 cm tall and spreads 1 m wide carrying small, green leaves that darken in winter. The branches are dark brown, slim, and tend to overlap each other in such a way that they become more prominent than the leaves. It grows best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site though will tolerate dry periods, frost, cool climates, wind, and coastal conditions. “Flat Freddy” is commonly included in coastal gardens, used as an interesting ground cover, added to borders, planted around larger trees or on a bank, or included in alpine gardens.
