How to grow Clianthus ‘Red Cardinal’ in NZ

Plant in a sunny, sheltered location with free-draining soil. Clianthus prefers slightly sandy or loamy soils enriched with organic matter. Water regularly while young, then reduce frequency once established, as it is drought tolerant. Avoid heavy clay soils or waterlogged conditions. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.

Clianthus ‘Red Cardinal’ care tips

Feed annually in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and prolific flowering. Protect from severe frost, especially in exposed areas. Remove dead or damaged branches to maintain plant health. Keep an eye out for caterpillars or aphids, which can be controlled organically or with an appropriate insecticide.

Clianthus ‘Red Cardinal’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Typically grows 2–3 m tall and wide with a fast growth rate. Space plants at least 2 m apart to allow for their natural spread and to achieve a full, lush display.
