Clianthus maximus (Red Kakabeak)

5 from 2 customers

Clianthus maximus, commonly known as Red Kakabeak, is a NZ native shrub that produces masses of beak-like flowers during winter and spring. The showy, red flowers transform the plant, complemented by mid-green foliage as it grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Clianthus maximus is commonly included in mixed plantings, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown to mask a bland wall, planted around outdoor living areas, maintained in containers, or mass-planted for an impressive display.

Growing Clianthus maximus Successfully in NZ

Clianthus maximus grows best in a sunny, sheltered location with free-draining soil. It thrives in mild regions of New Zealand and benefits from protection against heavy frosts and strong winds. Plant it in soil enriched with organic matter, and water regularly during dry periods, especially when the plant is young. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth.

Clianthus maximus Care Tips

Clianthus maximus prefers full sun and well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Please protect it from heavy frost and strong winds, especially when young. Water regularly during dry periods, but avoid overwatering. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage bushy growth and more blooms. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. This native shrub benefits from a balanced fertiliser in spring.

Plant Size and Spacing

Clianthus maximus typically grows 2-3 metres tall and spreads 1.5-2.5 metres wide. When planting multiple specimens, space them about 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for mature growth and good air circulation. Select a sunny, sheltered spot with ample room for the plant to spread naturally and display its spectacular flowers.
