How to grow Cistus ‘Sunset’ in NZ

Plant in a sunny, sheltered position with free-draining soil to encourage prolific flowering. Avoid heavy clay or overly fertile soil, as this can reduce blooming. Once established, Cistus ‘Sunset’ requires minimal watering, making it perfect for dry or exposed sites. It is highly tolerant of salt spray, wind, and drought, making it well-suited to coastal areas. For best results, plant in spring or autumn so roots can establish before extreme temperatures arrive.

Cistus ‘Sunset’ care tips

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape, but avoid cutting into old wood as this may hinder regrowth. Fertilise sparingly, as excessive nutrients can encourage leafy growth over flowers. Apply a light mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep the plant on the drier side during winter to prevent root issues, and remove any damaged branches in early spring to promote fresh, healthy growth.

Cistus ‘Sunset’ size, spacing, and growth rate

This shrub typically grows to around 1 m tall and 1.2 m wide. Space plants approximately 1–1.5 m apart to allow for natural spreading without overcrowding. Cistus ‘Sunset’ is moderately fast-growing, reaching near-mature size within three years under ideal conditions. Its neat, rounded habit makes it a versatile choice for both individual feature planting and group displays.

Landscaping uses for Cistus ‘Sunset’

Ideal for coastal gardens, dry slopes, rockeries, and Mediterranean-style landscapes, Cistus ‘Sunset’ brings vibrant colour to sunny mixed borders. It works beautifully in mass plantings for a bold, long-lasting summer display and pairs well with other drought-tolerant plants such as lavender, rosemary, and ornamental grasses. Its tolerance for poor soil and dry conditions makes it an excellent low-maintenance option.
