Cistus 'Snowmound' (White Rock Rose)

How to grow Cistus 'Snowmound' in NZ

Plant in a sunny, well-drained position for best flowering results. Avoid overly fertile or heavy clay soils, as these can encourage excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms. Once established, Cistus 'Snowmound' is very drought-tolerant, requiring little supplementary watering. Its resilience to salt spray and wind makes it perfect for coastal planting. For best establishment, plant in spring or autumn so roots can develop before the extremes of summer or winter.

Cistus 'Snowmound' care tips

Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, rounded form, but avoid cutting into old wood as regrowth is limited. Fertilise sparingly, as too much nutrient can lead to fewer flowers. Apply mulch annually to help retain soil moisture and keep weeds at bay. Remove any damaged or straggly stems in early spring to refresh the plant and promote healthy new growth.

Cistus 'Snowmound' size, spacing, and growth rate

This variety typically grows to around 1 m tall and 1.2 m wide. Allow 1–1.5 m between plants to prevent overcrowding and to enable each to form a natural dome shape. Cistus 'Snowmound' has a moderate growth rate, reaching near-mature size in about three years under ideal growing conditions.

Landscaping uses for Cistus 'Snowmound'

Perfect for coastal gardens, dry slopes, and rockeries, Cistus 'Snowmound' works beautifully in Mediterranean-style landscapes or sunny mixed borders. The plant's ability to perform in poor soils and harsh conditions makes it a versatile, low-maintenance landscaping solution.
