How to grow Cistus lusitanicus in NZ

Plant in full sun with well-draining soil to encourage abundant flowering. Avoid rich or heavy soils, as these may reduce flower production and increase the risk of root rot. Once established, Cistus lusitanicus is highly drought-tolerant and requires little supplementary watering. It is well-suited to coastal areas thanks to its salt and wind resistance. For best establishment, plant in spring or autumn to allow the root system to settle before temperature extremes.

Cistus lusitanicus care tips

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy, compact shape, but avoid cutting into old wood as this may prevent regrowth. Feed sparingly in spring with a low-phosphorus fertiliser to encourage flowering. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the plant’s base. Remove any damaged or dead stems in early spring to promote healthy new growth.

Cistus lusitanicus size, spacing, and growth rate

This shrub typically grows to around 1.5 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Space plants 1.2–1.5 m apart to allow for natural spreading without overcrowding. Cistus lusitanicus is moderately fast-growing, often reaching near-mature size within three to four years in ideal conditions. Its rounded, bushy form makes it perfect for both stand-alone planting and grouped displays.

Landscaping uses for Cistus lusitanicus

An excellent choice for coastal gardens, dry banks, rockeries, and Mediterranean-themed plantings, Cistus lusitanicus adds drama and seasonal colour to sunny borders. It pairs well with lavender, rosemary, and ornamental grasses for a drought-tolerant planting scheme. The plant’s tolerance to poor soil and low water makes it a reliable choice for low-maintenance landscapes. Its striking flowers also make it an attractive focal plant when used individually.
