How to grow Cistus crispus in NZ

Plant in full sun in a free-draining soil to ensure optimal flowering and longevity. Avoid overly fertile or heavy soils, as these can cause excessive leaf growth at the expense of blooms. Once established, Cistus crispus is highly drought-tolerant and performs well in exposed, coastal environments due to its salt and wind resistance. For best establishment, plant in spring or autumn so roots can develop before extreme weather sets in.

Cistus crispus care tips

Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth, but avoid cutting into old wood, as this can limit regrowth. Feed sparingly in spring with a low-phosphorus fertiliser to promote flowering without excessive foliage. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring mulch is kept clear of the crown. Remove damaged or straggly stems in early spring to keep plants healthy and attractive.

Cistus crispus size, spacing, and growth rate

Cistus crispus typically grows to around 60 cm tall and 80 cm wide, forming a neat, rounded mound. Space plants about 70–90 cm apart to allow for natural spreading and airflow between plants. It has a moderate growth rate and will usually reach its mature size within three years under ideal conditions.

Landscaping uses for Cistus crispus

Perfect for coastal gardens, Mediterranean-themed plantings, rockeries, and sunny mixed borders, Cistus crispus pairs beautifully with lavender, rosemary, and ornamental grasses. Its compact form and vibrant pink blooms make it ideal for mass planting or as a low hedge. The plant’s ability to thrive in poor, dry soils ensures it remains a reliable, low-maintenance choice for challenging garden conditions.
