How to grow Cistus ‘Bennetts White’ in NZ

Plant in a sunny position with well-draining soil to encourage prolific flowering. Cistus ‘Bennetts White’ performs best in poor to moderately fertile soils, as too much fertility can result in fewer flowers. It is highly tolerant of dry conditions once established and copes well in coastal environments. For best results, plant in spring or autumn so the roots can develop before the extremes of summer heat or winter cold.

Cistus ‘Bennetts White’ care tips

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and stimulate new growth. Avoid cutting into old wood as this can prevent regrowth. Feed in spring with a balanced, low-phosphorus fertiliser to enhance flowering and foliage health. Apply mulch annually to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch clear of the plant’s base to avoid stem rot. Remove any dead or damaged stems in early spring.

Cistus ‘Bennetts White’ size, spacing, and growth rate

This compact shrub typically grows to around 1 m tall and 1.2 m wide. Allow 1–1.2 m between plants to give them enough room to spread naturally. Cistus ‘Bennetts White’ has a moderate growth rate and reaches maturity within three to four years. Its rounded habit and prolific flowering make it an excellent option for small gardens or as part of a mixed border.

Landscaping uses for Cistus ‘Bennetts White’

Cistus ‘Bennetts White’ is ideal for coastal gardens, Mediterranean-style landscapes, rockeries, and sunny mixed borders. It pairs beautifully with lavender, rosemary, and other drought-tolerant perennials. Its clean white blooms make it a striking contrast to richly coloured plants and provide a cooling effect in hot, sunny areas. Perfect for mass planting or as a single feature shrub.
