How to grow Carmichaelia kirkii in NZ

Carmichaelia kirkii, commonly known as Kirk’s broom, is a hardy New Zealand native that grows well in full sun and well-drained soil. It is well suited to dry, rocky, and coastal environments, and thrives in exposed sites with poor or sandy soils. Plant in a well-drained, open, and sunny position with good air circulation. Water regularly during the first year to help establish a strong root system, then only during prolonged dry periods. It does not tolerate waterlogged soil. Mulch lightly to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and avoid overfeeding. Carmichaelia kirkii is low-maintenance and naturally resistant to pests and diseases.

Carmichaelia kirkii care tips

Carmichaelia kirkii is a tough, low-maintenance native ideal for dry or exposed conditions. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil, and water regularly during the first year to help it establish. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and needs little additional care. Avoid overwatering or planting in poorly drained soils. No regular pruning is required, but you can lightly trim to shape if needed. It is naturally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a reliable choice for low-input gardens.

Plant Size and Spacing

Carmichaelia kirkii typically grows to 1–2 metres tall and 1–1.5 metres wide, forming a compact, shrubby shape with upright, leafless stems. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, particularly in dry or exposed conditions. For mass planting or native restoration, space plants 1–1.2 metres apart. When used as a specimen or in mixed native borders, allow 1.5 metres between plants to accommodate mature spread and ensure good airflow.
