Camellia 'Lemon Drop'

Camellia 'Lemon Drop' is an evergreen shrub that features small, double, white flowers with a hint of lemon. These are produced from winter through spring and contrast splendidly with the glossy, dark green foliage as it grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Camellia 'Lemon Drop' is commonly grown as a specimen, clipped into a hedge, added to a mixed planting, used in cottage gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or used as a backdrop for smaller plants.

How to grow Camellia ‘Lemon Drop’ in NZ

Plant in a semi-shaded to full-sun position with well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Camellia ‘Lemon Drop’ prefers sheltered sites that protect it from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds. Water regularly during dry periods to maintain even soil moisture, especially in the first two years after planting. For best results, plant in autumn or early spring to give roots time to establish before temperature extremes.

Camellia ‘Lemon Drop’ care tips

Mulch annually with compost or pine needles to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil acidity. Feed in spring and again in summer with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants to encourage strong growth and abundant flowers. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove any damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood as this can reduce flowering.

Camellia ‘Lemon Drop’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Camellia ‘Lemon Drop’ typically grows to around 1.5–2 m tall and 1–1.5 m wide with a moderate growth rate. Space plants 1–1.5 m apart for hedging or group plantings. Its compact, upright growth habit makes it equally suited to feature planting, low screening, or growing in large pots where its blooms can be admired up close.

Landscaping uses for Camellia ‘Lemon Drop’

This camellia is ideal for hedges, feature shrubs, or as a backdrop in mixed garden borders. Its soft yellow-tinged blooms pair beautifully with white or pastel flowers for a serene, elegant display. Suitable for Japanese-style gardens, shaded courtyards, and large containers, it also works well as a winter focal point near entrances where its flowers can be enjoyed at close range.
