Camellia 'Dolly Dyer'

How to grow Camellia 'Dolly Dyer' in NZ

Camellia 'Dolly Dyer' thrives in a sheltered position with morning sun or light shade. Plant in free draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter to support strong root development. Avoid heavy soils that remain wet through winter and protect from strong winds. In cooler regions of NZ, shield young plants from severe frost. Water regularly during establishment and apply mulch to maintain consistent soil moisture.

Camellia 'Dolly Dyer' care tips

Camellia 'Dolly Dyer' is relatively easy care once established. Keep the soil evenly moist during dry periods but avoid waterlogged conditions. Feed in early spring with a camellia fertiliser to promote healthy foliage and abundant blooms. Light pruning after flowering will help maintain a neat, compact shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove spent flowers and any damaged branches promptly, and refresh mulch annually to protect the roots.

Camellia 'Dolly Dyer' size, spacing, and growth rate

Camellia 'Dolly Dyer' typically grows to around 2.5 to 3 metres tall and about 2 metres wide in NZ conditions. It forms an upright, bushy shrub that can be shaped for hedging or maintained as a feature plant. Space plants approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for airflow and mature development. The growth rate is moderate, with steady annual growth when planted in suitable soil and given regular feeding.
