Slim Bottlebrush

Callistemon Slim is a variety of the commonly known Bottlebrush, and is grown for its narrow growth habit and pretty flowers. It grows as a multi-trunked shrub with small, mid-dark green foliage held densely. Through spring and summer, it produces masses of the spectacular red flowers to literally transform the plant as it grows to 2.5 m tall and 1.3 m wide. Callistemon Slim is commonly used for hedging or screening. It is also well suited to planting around outdoor living areas, including in mixed plantings, growing as a small specimen, using as a backdrop for smaller plants, or simply maintaining in a container.

How to grow the Callistemon Slim bottlebrush

To grow Callistemon ‘Slim’, choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil, as this cultivar thrives in bright conditions and adapts to various soil types, including clay and sandy loam. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, then reduce watering as it becomes drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the trunk. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its narrow, upright shape and encourage dense growth. Apply a low-phosphorus fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage and prolific flowering. ‘Slim’ typically grows to about 3 metres tall and only 1–1.5 metres wide, making it perfect for tight spaces, screening, or narrow garden beds. It produces vibrant red bottlebrush flowers mainly in spring and summer, attracting birds and pollinators.

What is the Callistemon Slim hedge spacing?

Growing an amazing Callistemon Slim hedge starts with determining how far apart to space the plants. As a general guide, 50 cm between the plants is the ideal spacing for this hedge. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can close up the spacing to 40 cm. However, going wider than 50 cm will have two effects. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing the plants compete for light, and in doing so, push each other upwards. The Plant Company recommends a 40-50 cm spacing to achieve an amazing hedge. Be sure to start trimming the sides of the hedge early to achieve a dense hedge.
