How to grow Callistemon Great Balls of Fire

To grow Callistemon 'Great Balls of Fire', plant it in a full sun location with well-drained soil, as this cultivar needs plenty of light to maintain its vibrant colour and dense form. Improve the soil before planting with compost or organic matter to give it a strong start. Water regularly during the first year to help establish a healthy root system, then only water during extended dry spells, as it is drought-tolerant once mature. Light pruning two to three times a year will keep 'Great Balls of Fire' compact, bushy, and colourful — it responds very well to shaping. Feed with a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser formulated for Australian natives in spring to promote vigorous growth. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the main stem to avoid rot. This variety is prized for its striking pink to red new growth rather than its flowers, making it perfect for low hedges, borders, or colourful garden accents.
