Calliandra tweedii, commonly known as Red Flash or the Mexican Flame Bush, is a shrub grown for its foliage and striking flowers. It bears masses of large and showy, pink-red, pom-pom like flowers which are produced through most of the year, but predominantly in summer. It produces sprawling, outward reaching branches that carry fine and delicate green foliage. This evergreen typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide and performs best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of light frost once established, dry periods, and coastal conditions. Calliandra tweedii is an ideal plant to grow as a specimen, adding to mixed plantings, using as a backdrop for smaller plants, and suits coastal, cottage, Mediterranean, oriental, and tropical gardens.
