Caesalpinia gilliesii Details

Caesalpinia gilliesii, commonly known as Poinciana or Bird of Paradise Tree, is a large shrub that is grown for its hardy nature and colourful flowers in summer. Clusters of yellow and red flowers create a wonderful display above the fern-like, green foliage and are great for attracting birds and butterflies. It typically grows to 2.5 m tall and wide with a broad and somewhat open growth habit. This evergreen grows best in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate extended dry periods but does need to be protected from frost. Caesalpinia gilliesii is commonly used in mixed and border plantings, planted around pool areas and other outdoor living spaces, or used as a backdrop to smaller plants. It is a perfect plant for xeriscaping or trimming into a hedge.
