Buxus sempervirens ‘Suffruticosa’ is a variety of the commonly known, Box Hedge, and produces masses of small, dark green leaves. The foliage is held densely on short stems with new growth being a refreshing, light green. Left untrimmed it will eventually grow to 1 m tall and the same wide but is often trimmed to much smaller sizes. This shrub performs best when planted in full sun or partial on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It is tolerant of most soil types, except at the extremes of wet and dry, frost, cool climates, and coastal conditions. Buxus ‘Suffruticosa’ is commonly trimmed into a small hedge, used for topiary, or maintained in a container. Space plants 20 cm apart for a box hedge in NZ.
