Berzelia rubra is an upright, evergreen shrub that grows to about 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide. It has narrow, light-green feathery leaves that are tightly arranged around wispy stems. In late winter through early summer it produces clusters of cream coloured flowers which appear as fluffy balls at the branch tips. Flowers are followed by attractive, maroon coloured seed heads. It should be planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site for best results. This unusual, yet striking plant looks great in mixed plantings and the flower heads are often used by florists.
