Berzelia rubra

How to grow Berzelia rubra in NZ

Berzelia rubra grows best in a sunny position with well drained soil and good air circulation. In New Zealand gardens it performs particularly well in lighter soils and coastal conditions where drainage is excellent. Choose a warm open location where the plant receives plenty of sunlight. Water regularly while the plant establishes so strong roots develop, then reduce watering once established.

Berzelia rubra care tips

Berzelia rubra is relatively easy to care for once established. Water during extended dry periods while plants are young so they continue to grow strongly. A light application of low phosphorus fertiliser in spring can support healthy growth. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages dense branching.

Berzelia rubra size, spacing, and growth rate

Berzelia rubra typically grows to around one to one point five metres tall and about the same width. It has a moderate growth rate and forms a dense shrub with fine textured foliage. For best results allow about one metre of space between plants so they can develop properly. In suitable conditions this plant becomes an attractive structural feature in the landscape.

Landscaping uses for Berzelia rubra

Berzelia rubra is widely used in modern gardens where texture and structure are important design elements. It works well in coastal plantings, dry gardens, and mixed shrub borders. The fine foliage contrasts beautifully with larger leaf plants and ornamental grasses. The decorative flower heads are also valued for use in cut flower arrangements.
