Bergenia ciliata is grown for its foliage and flowers. This herbaceous perennial has large, glossy, deep green leaves which develop maroon tones in autumn. Clusters of showy, pale pink flowers flushed with dark pink rise above the foliage in spring. Flowers in some climates appear before the new leaves emerge. It grows as a clump with the leaves emerging as a rosette. It grows to about 35 cm tall and 50 cm wide and in cold climates it may die back during winter to regrow again when conditions warm. Bergenia are incredibly hardy and will tolerate a wide range of soil and light conditions. Best results are achieved when planted on a well-drained site in either full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of frost and coastal environments. Use this plant as a groundcover, include in borders and mixed plantings, grow in a container, or plant in the shady areas of the garden. A mass planting provides an impressive result.
