Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow

Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow is a small, deciduous shrub treasured for its impressively coloured foliage. New leaves in spring are purple and irregularly marbled with pink and white. They age to purple, then take on red and orange tones in autumn before falling. It grows densely to about 1 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow is commonly trimmed into a hedge or added to a mixed planting. The thorns make it ideal for blocking thoroughfares and trimmed plants will form a dense, impenetrable, yet attractive hedge.

How to grow a Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow hedge

To grow a Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow' as a hedge, choose a sunny to part-shaded site with well-drained soil. This deciduous shrub thrives in most soil types and is drought-tolerant once established. For a dense hedge, plant individual shrubs 40–60 cm apart. Dig holes twice as wide as the root balls and at the same depth, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the hedge and encourage bushiness, and lightly trim after flowering if needed. This variety can be slow to establish but forms a beautiful, thorny, and colourful barrier with deep burgundy foliage that intensifies in autumn. It's also deer-resistant and ideal for security hedging due to its dense, thorny structure.

Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow care guide

This attractive deciduous shrub is grown for its striking variegated foliage—rose-pink leaves marbled with cream and deep purple. It performs best in full sun, which enhances the leaf colour, though it will tolerate partial shade. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage dense, bushy growth. ‘Rose Glow’ responds well to trimming, making it ideal for use in borders, hedges, or as a stand-alone feature. It is generally pest- and disease-resistant and its thorny stems help deter browsing by animals. In autumn, the foliage turns bright red, and small red berries may appear, attracting birds. This variety adds vibrant colour and texture to any garden and is a great choice for low-maintenance, year-round interest.
