Berberis thunbergii Maria

Barberry Shrub, Berberis Maria

Berberis thunbergii Maria is a popular Berberis variety due to its striking yellow foliage and ease to grow. The small leaves on this deciduous shrub have a fresh appeal and create an element of vibrancy. They turn shades of orange, yellow and red in autumn before falling. It will grow to 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide but is more often clipped into a hedge of smaller size. Berberis thunbergii Maria is an attractive plant for hedging, mixed plantings, or growing as a specimen. The thorns on the branches makes it ideal to block thoroughfares.

How to grow a Berberis thunbergii Maria hedge

To grow a Berberis thunbergii 'Maria' as a hedge, choose a sunny to part-shaded site with well-drained soil. This deciduous shrub thrives in most soil types and is drought-tolerant once established. For a dense hedge, plant individual shrubs 40–60 cm apart. Dig holes twice as wide as the root balls and at the same depth, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the hedge and encourage bushiness, and lightly trim after flowering if needed. This variety can be slow to establish but forms a beautiful, thorny, and colourful barrier with deep burgundy foliage that intensifies in autumn. It's also deer-resistant and ideal for security hedging due to its dense, thorny structure.

Berberis thunbergii Maria care guide

Berberis thunbergii 'Maria' is a compact, upright deciduous shrub known for its vibrant golden-yellow foliage that turns orange-red in autumn. It grows best in full sun, which helps maintain the bright leaf colour, but can tolerate light shade. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Its naturally columnar shape requires minimal pruning—just remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring. This variety is ideal for borders, containers, or as a colourful vertical accent in small gardens. The plant is hardy, deer-resistant, and generally free from pests and diseases. In autumn, red berries may form, attracting birds and adding seasonal appeal. 'Maria' offers year-round interest with its bold foliage and upright form, making it an excellent choice for adding structure and colour to the garden.
