Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea

Purple Barberry, Purple Japanese Barberry

Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea, commonly known as Berberis, is very popular due to its colourful foliage and ease to grow. The foliage emerges a lustrous purple-red in spring, ages to a darker purple, then develops orange-red tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary which stimulates new growth. Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea is commonly used for hedging or added to a mixed planting. The thorns make it ideal for blocking thoroughfares and trimmed plants will form a dense, impenetrable, yet attractive hedge.

How to grow a Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea hedge

To grow a Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea' (commonly known as Purple Japanese Barberry) as a hedge, choose a sunny to part-shaded site with well-drained soil. This deciduous shrub thrives in most soil types and is drought-tolerant once established. For a dense hedge, plant individual shrubs 40–60 cm apart. Dig holes twice as wide as the root balls and at the same depth, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the hedge and encourage bushiness, and lightly trim after flowering if needed. This variety can be slow to establish but forms a beautiful, thorny, and colourful barrier with deep burgundy foliage that intensifies in autumn. It's also deer-resistant and ideal for security hedging due to its dense, thorny structure.

Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea care guide

This hardy deciduous shrub is low-maintenance and well-suited to New Zealand gardens. It prefers full sun for best foliage colour but will tolerate partial shade. The deep burgundy-purple leaves turn brilliant red-orange in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires only occasional watering. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or crossing branches and to maintain the desired shape—this also encourages dense, compact growth ideal for hedging. Watch for aphids and scale, though pests are rarely a major issue. Berberis is generally disease-free and resistant to browsing by rabbits and deer. With its colourful foliage and thorny stems, this plant makes a striking and secure hedge that also attracts birds to the garden with its small red berries in autumn.
