The foliage emerges a lustrous purple-red in spring, ages to a darker purple, then develops orange-red tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary which stimulates new growth. Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea is commonly used for hedging or added to a mixed planting. The thorns make it ideal for blocking thoroughfares and trimmed plants will form a dense, impenetrable, yet attractive hedge.

Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea Details

Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea, commonly known as Berberis, is very popular due to its colourful foliage and ease to grow. Tiny, pale yellow flowers are produced in spring and result in bright red berries during winter which attract birds. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary which stimulates new growth. Plants are tolerant of most growing conditions, except extreme wet or dry, and perform best when planted on well-drained site in full sun. They are tolerant of frost, cool climates, and coastal conditions. Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea is commonly used for hedging or added to a mixed planting.
