Berberis Little Favourite

Dwarf Barberry

Berberis Little Favourite is a compact and rounded, deciduous shrub featuring colourful foliage. The foliage emerges purple-dark red in spring and remains this colour until autumn. As autumn progresses the foliage develops red and orange tones before falling. It grows densely to about 50 cm tall and the same wide. Berberis Little Favourite is commonly used in borders, trimmed into a small hedge, or maintained in a container. The richly coloured foliage and bright autumn colours are great for adding flair to the garden.

Berberis Little Favourite care guide

This hardy deciduous shrub is low-maintenance and well-suited to New Zealand gardens. It prefers full sun for best foliage colour but will tolerate partial shade. The deep burgundy-purple leaves turn brilliant red-orange in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires only occasional watering. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or crossing branches and to maintain the desired shape—this also encourages dense, compact growth ideal for hedging. Watch for aphids and scale, though pests are rarely a major issue. Berberis is generally disease-free and resistant to browsing by rabbits and deer. With its colourful foliage and thorny stems, this plant makes a striking and secure hedge that also attracts birds to the garden with its small red berries in autumn.
