Bauera rubioides

River Rose

Bauera rubioides, commonly known as Dog Rose, is a small shrub grown for its flowering and ability to grow on wet soils. This evergreen carries tiny, dark green leaves, which develop red tones in winter. These are held tightly against rigid stems and also host pretty, pink-white flowers through most of the year. It typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide. Bauera rubioides is commonly planted at the edge of water features, included in riparian plantings, or added to a mixed planting.

How to grow Bauera rubioides?

Bauera rubioides is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its profuse, pink-striped flowers and fine green foliage. To grow it successfully, choose a spot with full sun to partial shade and well-draining, slightly acidic soil. It thrives in cool, temperate climates and appreciates protection from harsh afternoon sun or drying winds. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially while the plant is establishing. Mulching helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. It's excellent for cottage gardens, borders, or containers, and makes a lovely contrast plant with its unique flower colouring.
