How to grow Banksia spinulosa in NZ

Banksia spinulosa grows best in a sunny position with well drained soil and good air movement. In New Zealand gardens it performs particularly well in lighter soils and coastal areas where drainage is excellent. Choose a warm open site where the plant receives plenty of sunlight. Water regularly during the establishment period so roots develop well. Once established this plant is tolerant of dry conditions.

Banksia spinulosa care tips

Banksia spinulosa is relatively easy to maintain once established. Water during extended dry periods while the plant is young so strong roots develop. A light application of low phosphorus fertiliser in spring can support healthy growth. Light trimming after flowering will help maintain a tidy shape and encourage dense branching. Ensure the soil drains well as banksias prefer free draining conditions.

Banksia spinulosa size, spacing, and growth rate

Banksia spinulosa typically grows to around one point five to three metres tall and about two metres wide depending on growing conditions. It has a moderate growth rate and forms a dense upright shrub with attractive foliage. For best results allow around two metres of space between plants so they can develop properly. In suitable conditions this plant becomes a strong evergreen feature.

Landscaping uses for Banksia spinulosa

Banksia spinulosa is widely used as a feature shrub in sunny landscapes where its unusual flowers can be appreciated. It works well in native style plantings, coastal gardens, and mixed shrub borders. The striking flower spikes provide colour through cooler months and contrast beautifully with surrounding plants.
