How to grow Banksia ericifolia in NZ

Banksia ericifolia grows best in full sun with well drained soil and good air movement. In New Zealand gardens it performs particularly well in coastal areas and lighter soils where drainage is excellent. Choose a warm open position where the plant receives plenty of sunlight. Water regularly during the establishment period so roots develop well. Once established this banksia is very tolerant of dry conditions and coastal environments.

Banksia ericifolia care tips

Banksia ericifolia is relatively easy to maintain once established. Water during extended dry periods while the plant is young so strong roots develop. A light application of low phosphorus fertiliser in spring can support healthy growth. Light trimming after flowering will help maintain a tidy shape and encourage dense branching. Ensure the soil drains well as banksias prefer drier conditions rather than wet heavy soil.

Banksia ericifolia size, spacing, and growth rate

Banksia ericifolia typically grows to around two to four metres tall and about two metres wide depending on conditions. It has a moderate growth rate and forms an upright shrub with dense foliage. For best results allow about two metres of space between plants so they can develop their natural shape. In favourable conditions this plant becomes a strong evergreen feature with impressive flowering displays.

Landscaping uses for Banksia ericifolia

Banksia ericifolia is widely used as a feature shrub in sunny landscapes where its dramatic flower spikes can be appreciated. It works well in coastal gardens, native style plantings, and larger shrub borders. The bright flowers provide strong colour during cooler months when many plants are not flowering. It also attracts birds and pollinators which adds movement and life to the garden.
