In spring, tufted flowers are borne and produce a sweet, vanilla scent. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 2.5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods and frost. Azara microphylla variegata is commonly grown for its sophisticated texture and pattern and looks exceptional when planted against a light-coloured wall.
